Introducing INISMa

INISMa is a leading research centre in Wallonia and Europe, specialised in ceramic materials, particularly refractory materials. It has recognised expertise in additive manufacturing applied to advanced ceramics and printable refractory castables.

Characterization of construction materials

For over 15 years, INISMa has developed strong expertise in refractory castables, responding both to the global demand for these materials and to the needs of the industrial network located in Wallonia and north of France, which includes manufacturers, installers, and end-users of refractory castables.

The laboratory is equipped with all the devices and equipment necessary for the development of new products and their characterisation, from raw materials to end products.

The laboratory thus has the material and equipment necessary for the development of new products and for characterization from raw materials to finished products (before, during and after heat treatment).nt of doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows.

Experience and know-how

INISMa (in collaboration with CRIBC) has also built-up experience and expertise in additive manufacturing applied to advanced ceramics since 2008, using various technologies such as SLA, laser SLM, binder jetting, and robocasting, and has produced numerous 3D demonstrators.

This expertise was further extended in 2022 to the field of refractory concretes, with the acquisition of a Cartesian 3D printing system for concrete.

A research project in Wallonia (the BEXTRUS project), carried out in partnership with Buildwise and finished in August 2024, led to the development of a formulation strategy for a printable refractory cement-based ink, and the production of a 3D demonstrator using a model ink developed during the project.

Role of the partner in the project

As part of the 3DFORMWORKS project, INISMa acts as the lead partner, responsible for the scientific, technical, administrative, and financial coordination of the project. It is also in charge of formulating a low-carbon refractory cement-based ink, producing 3D demonstrators, and carrying out all characterisation steps, from the fresh state to post-printing thermomechanical testing.
